I love burning candles year-round. They instantly make a space feel warm and inviting, and the right scent can completely change the mood of a room. Over time, I’ve picked up a few habits that help candles burn better and last longer, these are the tips I always follow.
- When burning a new candle, allow it to burn until the entire surface becomes liquid wax. This helps prevent tunneling and sets the candle up for an even burn.
- Burn your candles for at least 2–3 hours at a time to allow the wax pool to fully develop.
- Keep wicks trimmed to about ¼ inch before each burn to avoid excess soot and uneven flames.
- Avoid drafts. A calm, centered flame helps distribute heat evenly for a cleaner burn.
- I recommend burning candles no longer than 4 hours at a time. After that, candles can get too hot and begin to burn off fragrance more quickly.
- Let the candle cool completely before relighting to help maintain the wick and scent throw.
- The best way I’ve found to extinguish a candle is with a wick dipper; my second choice is a candle snuffer. Both help prevent smoke and keep the wick centered.
I hope these tips help you enjoy your candles longer and burn them a little more safely. What are your favorite candle scents lately?
